If the original owner fail to renew it and the name dropped it will be available to re-register legally and this is where to make money from it, this is how it works; during the the time the domain name is still a website, the owner may have promoted it in various ways in terms of traffic rankings, adverts and search engine optimisation. Now the domain have pagerank and rich traffic ranking. if the name expired and the owner fail to renew it, if you register such a name, all you need to do is to go and park it in a parking company{which is free of course} the parking company will now put ads on that domain. whenever a visitor visits and clicks on any ad there you make money! that's how it works and they pay you every month.
I'm not recommending sedo here. they are ok but you need to have a private email address. they don't accept free emails such as gmail, hotmail and co. for parking use bodis.com. they pay exactly on the 7th of every month. then for domain selling; afternic.com, undeveloped.com domainnamesales.com among others.
